St Mary, Glynde, East Sussex - 14th February 2004

St Mary, Glynde is a rare 18th century church built in 1763 of knapped (squared) flints, quite unlike the flint rubble constructions usually found in Sussex.  It stands on the site of a much earlier church, but owes nothing to its predecessor, being uncompromisingly classical in its design and its interior surprisingly domestic.

To quote a framed information sheet in the church:

"When the Lord Bishop of Durham, Dr. Richard Trevor, decided to rebuild the Church at Glynde, he asked Sir Thomas Robinson to design it for him (1763-1765)."
"Sir Thomas had been to Italy and had returned full of enthusiasm over the Renaissance buildings.  This it was that the new Church at Glynde was built in the then latest design, and is now almost unique.
"Specially attractive features are the Portland Stone Coat of Arms over the West door, the elegant plaster ceiling of the interior and the Flemish Glass Medallions (of the 16th century) in the tree Chancel windows."

Here are two views of the interior, one looking east the other west.  This is the first church I've visited where the walls are covered in printed hessian.  According to a plaque in the church:

"The accommodation in this Church was increased by the erection of a Gallery in the year 1841 by which means Eighty additional Sittings were obtained and in consequence of a Grant from the Incorporated Society for promoting the enlargement building and repairing of Churches & Chapels the whole of that number are hereby declared to be free and unappropriated for ever.  A plan shewing the number & situation of these free seats is deposited in the Parish Chest, there being no Vestry Room. WILLIAM ROSE, Vicar. JOHN ELLMAN, Churchwarden."

The "eighty" sittings are a very mean affair comprising very narrow benches without backs - and are less now the organ is situated on the gallery, which also unfortunately blocks the rear two windows a little.

Here are the windows, in sequence, starting at the west end of the south wall, working around the church back to the west end of the north wall.  All images of windows have had electronic perspective correction applied, from the dates on the inscriptions it is clear they were installed in pairs starting in the chancel and working west.
