Cinder Hill Tunnel, Newick - 30th July 2002

This disused railway tunnel is on the old route from East Grinstead to Lewes via Horsted Keynes and Sheffield Park.  The old Newick & Chailey station was half a mile or so north of this tunnel, and it is a short walk from my house.  I took my nephew Matthew to explore it, and despite the air of neglect it is not too hard to imagine the old steam trains puffing their way through.  The route itself is very overgrown both North and South.

The Tunnel had a moment of excitement during the war, when a train dashed for cover within its portals from fire from a German fighter plane.
