St Peter, Swallowcliffe, Wiltshire - 24th September 2003

This is the parish church in the village where we stayed for a week in September 2003.  This building was erected in 1842-3, possibly using some of the stones from the old church which stood for nearly seven centuries by the stream lower in the village before being demolished.

The cause for the rebuilding was that the old church regularly flooded, and possibly because it was sinking.  Independent accounts refer to frequent flooding to a level above the seats, sometimes leaving mud an inch thick on them!

Here is the marker where the old church used to stand, lower down in the village next to a stream.  The old churchyard gate is still there along with an ancient yew tree.
