St Richard's Church in Sydney Road, Haywards Heath was built in the garden of the former vicarage and was consecrated in 1938. It replaced a small building in Church Avenue which was opened in June 1897 as the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
The pipe organ, which was originally brought from the chapel of Lancing College, and the carved eagle lectern were transferred from the old church.
The demand for economy during the building's construction has led to a number of interesting features. Acceptance of a suggestion from the Diocesan Advisory Board led to an unusual arrangement of reinforced ribs throughout the length of the building, a gallery (for the organ and choir) and choir vestry is constructed over the north transept and there is a gallery at the west end to provide cheap additional seating. Finally there is no tower, instead there is a small bell turret over the south door, which is visible in the photograph above.
