St Margaret of Antioch, Ifield, Crawley, West Sussex - 23rd November 2004

An unfortunate coating of cement rendering has not improved the appearance of this ancient church, however it's interior is very interesting, with a sympathetic modern re-ordering including new pews and light wood flooring.

The church has a well written guide, well worth the £2 requested for it, and I have shamelessly sourced the information on this page from it.  Here are two views of the nave, looking east and west.  I rather like the round window above the high altar, and I think the re-ordering with modern furniture a great success.

The font is located just in front of the chancel arch and now doubles as a reading desk! It dates from about 1180. The pipe organ is located at the west end of the southern aisle.  It was installed in 1883 to the memory of George Arthur Trist (died 1927).

These figures are located each side of the nave at the east end.  The knight is said to commemorate Sir John de Ifield who died in 1317, but the costume indicates a date about ten years later.

Here are the three lancets of the west window.  They were installed in 1896 in memory of William Wood, Church Warden (1832 - 1895). They depict the Resurrection, Crucifixion and Ascension.

This attractive window, depicting St Stephen, Martyr, Jesus, the Light of the World, and Galahad, Knight is in the south wall. "To the Glory of God and in loving memory of George Augustus Pepper-Staveley, his wife, Jessie Louisa and their grandson, George Staveley Aitchison".  The window was installed in May 1927 by Dr Robert Swan and Mrs Jessie Georgina Annie Staveley Aitchison in memory of Mrs Aitchison's parents (George, 1823 - 1890 and Jessie, 1837 - 1925) together with their son George (1894 -1925).  George died after a short illness aged 31 years.  I like green glass, so particularly like the image of Sir Galahad.

Another window from the south wall (east end) depicts Mary and the Angel Gabriel "To the Glory of God & in loving memory of Lucy Isabel, wife of Rev. Walter Loveband formerly Vicar of the Parish and their two sons, Walter Beauchamp Yerburgh and Guy Yerburgh".

The window depicting St Michael and St George with lovely rich reds is in the eastern wall of the south aisle.

The windows in the side walls of the chancel are in general of lower quality, with much of the painted colour now gone.  The first window in the southern wall depicts the patron saint, St Margaret. "In memory of Mary only daughter of the late Revd Spencer James Lewin born 15 Jan 1794 died 15 Nov 1870."

The windows depicting Paul (Saul has no face), before and after his conversion, are in memory of Thomas Lewin. "Whom ye ignorantly worship, Him declare I unto You, In memory of Thomas Lewin, born 19th April 1805, died 5th Janry 1877".

The east window is not particularly interesting, but is colourful.

The window showing Mary with the infant Jesus, Mary Magdalene and St John was the gift ot WIlliam Shepperson (1862-1929).  The glass depicting the baby Jesus was broken by vandals around 1960 and replaced soon afterwards.

This glass is in a window in the north aisle and depicts St Thomas with the resurrected Christ and the disciples. They appear not to have necks - a very strange image.

These Royal Arms hang on the south wall at the base of the tower.

The final view is of the tower from the churchyard gate.
