In Cruce Salus

The following is taken from a notice under the next window:
This was the last design of Edward Salkeld Burrow, an artist who loved this Church and village.  His widow used it in the adjacent window which she erected to his memory after his death in 1927.  It is called "The Choice Between a Good and Evil Life" and shows, i medieval style, a rich young man with an angel on one side and a woman dressed in silver and gold on the other (with the devil lurking behind her), while Christ sits above in judgement.

The Latin words In Cruce Salus mean "In the Cross is (my) Salvation"; and the window was used as an illustration by the Archbishop of Canterbury when he re-dedicated the bells of the church in 1969 and preached a sermon on the text: "God forbid that I should glory, save in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ".

Edward Salkeld Burrow was a descendent of the Crosswell family.  Two of their memorials may be seen in the chancel and in the Horne Chapel.  There was once a third memorial in what is now the Vestry, where for many years it was used as the back-place to a fireplace.
