This church, in Clarence Street, was built in 1879 to replace a temporary structure which had been built in 1859 and had occupied the same site. Apparently this site had previously been occupied by a great manor house.

The church was designed by Ewan Christian.
The spire was removed in 1952 and reduced further in 1971 leaving a rather unattractive stump.
This town centre parish is now combined with St Mary's, and according to the notice board St Matthew's is the main base for activities, although St Mary's is still also used for services.
