Unlike the ancient St Margaret's Church, the current church of St Mary, built and endowed in the late 1800's by Rev. A.D. Wagner, and opened in October 1884, is in the centre of Buxted, close to the railway station. It is of unusual flint construction, more in line with the churches of the South Downs rather than the sandstone churches nearby.
There is a fine oak pulpit in the church.
