Originally built in 1849 in the gothic style with stone cladding and an iron arcade as a chapel for St Mary's Hall School. It later served as the Parish Church for the Sussex Square and Lewes Crescent area of Kemp Town. On closure in 1985 it returned to its original use as the chapel to the adjacent Anglican girls' boarding school.
In 1995/6 the church was used by the congregation of St John the Baptist Catholic Church during building work and again in 1998/9 by St George's for the same reason.
