The church was built at the expense of William Gibb, designed by Major Rhode Hawkins and built by Mr G. P. White of London. The building was consecrated on 30th September 1868.

The church is built of blue Westleigh stone, dressed with Ham Hill stone. The interior pillars are of Devonshire marble. The Tower, which is of three stages, has an open parapet table and pinnacles.
The Church Spire, which is surmounted by a twelve foot cross, is the tallest in Exeter. It is constructed of Bath stone, with the cone and ornamental string bands in Ham Hill stone. Many crosses on the pinnacles of the tower have had to be removed as the ironwork corroded. For the foundations to the top it measures 67m (220ft). The tower contains just one bell, the original peal envisaged was not installed owing to objections from local people!
The church has its own website here, which has details about the building's history and a large photo gallery.
