Combe Martin is the village where Alan was brought up, until he was about 13 when his family moved to Barnstaple.
The church of St. Peter ad Vincular is approximately a mile inland, with a small stream adjacent to the churchyard wall. The southern door of this red sandstone building has a Sanctuary Ring. The Sanctuary Ring saved criminals who were able to clutch it from arrest and imprisonment - as long as they confessed their crimes and left the country. This practice was abolished by the establishment in the 17th century.
This church appears in my antique postcard album - outside - inside. It appears the clock has moved up the tower since those pictures were taken!
Alan showed me this strange monument on the south wall. Apparently the story about what happened involves a visit to the pub before the last two lines were carved. Sounds plausible?!
