Chapel, Columb John, Broad Clyst, Devon - 15th August 2004

Columb John is an ancient manor, mentioned in the Domesday book. In 1672 the Ackland family moved to Killerton, 1 mile to the east.  Today only the arch of the gate house of their former house remains. The tiny chapel became dilapidated and a new chapel was built at Killerton by Sir T. D. Acland, Bart. in 1841. After Sir Thomas died, his second son Arthur, an enthusiast for church architecture, restored the old family chapel at Columb John, which the family continued to use for burials.

Here is a closer view of the door and small window, beautifully executed.

This small hole is in the wall to the left of the tower (at ground level). Presumably it is a vent, although I would have thought it would allow mice access!
