During July 2003 we spent a very pleasant few days staying with Alan's mother Vera in Devon. As we are National Trust members, we visited several of their properties, as well as some churches and places of railway interest.
Adjacent to Arlington Court is this church, dedicated to St James. The nave and chancel were rebuilt in 1846, and the tower, perhaps in 1899. Rev. Henry G Ayre, the author of the guide available in the church expresses doubt about the tower rebuilding as he has found evidence of a previous roof line on the tower fabric and no evidence for a rebuilding in the parish records.
The church has close associations with the Chichester family, the builders of Arlington Court, and contains various monuments to that family.

The organ is rather unusually sited in the south aisle or porch, effectively blocking both the door and a window, as well as preventing access to several monuments.

Peacocks roam the grounds at Arlington and we found this one sun bathing in a grave. Alan collected several feathers nearby.
