This church is situated in the city centre where the four main streets of Chester meet. The tower contains eight bells cast in 1709; one is engraved "When you ring, I'll sing".
According to tradition, on the site of this church stood the Roman Praetorian, built by Ethelfleda, countess of Mercia.
It is thought that the original dedication was to St. Paul and St. Peter.
